Electric Axles for Medium-duty Commercial Vehicles

BorgWarner has designed, built, and tested several electrified axles for medium duty commercial applications. The company’s experience with the key components that make up the axles -including the motors, inverters, and transmissions – as well as its system level simulation capabilities regarding batteries, on- and off-board charging systems and thermal management components allowed for an optimization from a total vehicle perspective.

 

Efficiency Potential Through Holistic Optimization of Electric Drive Systems In order to increase the efficiency and therefore the range of electric vehicles, many car manufacturers are relying on ever larger and therefore heavier and more expensive batteries. ZF shows that higher efficiency already can be achieved in the first step of the development and optimization of an electric drive. Using a holistic, multi-criteria optimization approach allowed to develop a drive that sets a new benchmark in terms of performance data, and at the same time enables significantly greater sustainability in terms of the supply chain.

 

In the Interview, Thomas Müller, Executive Vice President Future Powertrain at IAV, comments on the price development of BEVs as well as technology options for electric machines and traction batteries.

High-performance Polyimides for Battery and Hydrogen-powered Vehicles

n recent years, electromobility has fundamentally changed the automotive industry and has posed numerous technical challenges, including the growing demand for higher powertrain efficiency. Frictional resistance in the entire drivetrain, such as in the electric motor, reduction gearbox and differential, must be considered to optimize the vehicle’s performance and driving range. High performance polymers are playing an ever-increasing role in tribological driveline components, enabling high performance, durability, and efficiency of gearboxes in various applications. This article will take a closer look at two demanding applications: tribologically optimized thrust washers in transmissions and high-performance seals in hydrogen propulsion systems. DuPont has developed a novel material that can withstand even the most challenging tribological conditions, such as the combination of high loads and extremely high speeds.

Efficient NVH Optimization of Electric Drive Units using Digital Twins 

Tonal noise components, primarily originating from the electric drive unit, dominate the interior sound experience in electric vehicles. In this article, AVL presents a methodology that focuses on tonality evaluation, target setting, and the integration of artificial intelligence for multi-dimensional optimization.

Battery electric vehicles will be a key part of future mobility. Reinova has set up a network of different test benches for battery tests that take into account the higher technical requirements of new battery concepts. Artificial intelligence methods are also used for test specification.

Measuring Brake and Tire Particles on the Test Bench

In modern vehicles, the braking system is the dominant source of particulate emissions. Many regions around the world therefore also want to limit non-engine particulate emissions. In the EU, the future Euro 7 directive will stipulate limit values for brake particle emissions from passenger cars and light commer-cial vehicles up to 3.5 t total mass. In addition, specifications for particulate matter caused by tire abrasion and for brake and tire particles in heavier com-mercial vehicles are under discussion.

Zero-impact Emissions for All Traffic Scenarios through Optimization of Exhaust Aftertreatment Systems

In the FVV project (no. 1412) „Zero-Impact Tailpipe Emission Powertrains“, two reference vehicles with current exhaust gas aftertreatment systems were examined under demanding operating conditions at the RWTH Aachen University. lt is shown that both vehicles no longer have a significant impact on air quality in most scenarios and that they fulfill the criterion of Zero-Impact Emissions. By integrating additional heating measures and increasing catalytic converter volumes, this can also be achieved in other critical scenarios.
